Visiting Websites

What is the difference between websites and webpages?

A webpage is a single page of information on the internet, where a website is a collection webpage’s that can be accessed through a common web address. A web address is the location of a specific website on the internet.

Example: www.socialplanningcouncil-cnd.org.

You can access websites using browsers. The most common browser used is Internet Explorer. Other browsers include Firefox, Opera, MSN Explorer and Netscape. Browsers let you view websites with many different integrated features.

To open your browser:
  1. Click on “start” located at the bottom left corner of the screen
  2. Move your mouse cursor over “All Programs” a menu on the right will appear
  3. Move your mouse cursor over “Internet Explorer” and click
Note: Depending on how your system is set up the "Internet Explorer" icon may appear on your desktop

When you first open your browser the first website that you see is known as your Home page. This can be changed to any website you like. See figure 1 for all the sections of the browser.

Figure 1 - Screenshot of a web browser

File Menu - Contains different options or commands for the browser

Standard Buttons - This toolbar allows for quick navigation and other shortcuts

Address Bar - Input section for the web address you want to view

Status Bar - Displays information about the currently selected command or about the operation in progress

To go to a website type the address for that website in the Address Bar and click “Go”. If you are not sure what the address for that website is you can use a search engine.
