Internet Terminology

Bandwidth A measure of the capacity of a communication channel. The higher the bandwidth the more information it can carry
Binary Information number system consisting entirely of zeros and ones.
Broadband Comes from the words “broad bandwidth” and is a high capacity two way linking between the end user and the access network suppliers.
Browser Software program used to view and interact with internet resources on the internet.
Cookie Small data files written to a user’s hard drive by the web server through the web browser.
Domain name A unique name that identifies an internet site.
Download Transferring data from a remote computer to the users computer. Opposite of upload.
Email Comes from the words “electronic mail”. Messages that are sent and received through computers on a network.
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) A Protocol that is used to transmit files between computers and the internet.
Hit As used in reference to the World Wide Web is a single request from the web browser for a single item on the web server.
Home Page The opening page or the main page that appears when you visit a website.
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) The coding syntax used to write world wide web documents which are read by web browsers.
HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) The communication protocol that enables web browsing.
Hypertext Any text that contains links to other documents
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) A massive network of text based chat channels
Network A group of computers, connected by a telecommunications link, that share information.
Ping (Packet Internet Groper) A utility that forwards data packets to check the quality of a link.
Server A computer that delivers information and software to other computers linked by a network.
Spam Unsolicited, unwanted, irrelevant, or inappropriate messages, especially commercial advertising in mass quantities.
Spyware Any software that covertly gathers user information through the user's Internet connection without his or her knowledge, usually for advertising purposes.
Upload To transfer a file from a desktop computer onto a web server.
Virus Self-replicating program that spreads by inserting copies of itself into other executable code or documents
